Jimmy Stewart gra tu szlachetnego i naiwnego prawnika z wielkiego miasta, który postanawia stawić czoła bandycie Liberty Valance'owi (Lee Marvin) terroryzującemu miasteczko na Pograniczu. Największą gwiazdą filmu jest jednak John Wayne, prawy kowboj i mistrz w posługiwaniu się bronią.
