Tytułowy Joe Dirt (David Spade), w wieku ośmiu lat został porzucony przez swoich rodziców w Wielkim Kanionie. Całe swoie późniejsze dorosłe życie, Joe poświęcił na szukaniu rodziców. Podczas przemierzania całej Ameryki, na swojej drodze Joe spotyka wielu dziwaków jak i bierze udział w wielu przygodach. W końcu osiedla się w Los Angeles, gdzie pracuje w jednej z rozgłośni radiowych jako dozorca. Tam zwraca uwagę na niego jeden z prezenterów, który zaprasza Joego aby ten opowiedział swoją historię na antenie.
