Rodzina MCann szykuje się do urodzin młodszej córki Megan. Jej starsza siostra dekoruje tort urodzinowy i rozmawia przez telefon z matką. Dzwonek do drzwi: mężczyzna podający się za posłańca ze sklepu, rzuca się na Julię, gwałci i zabija. Sierżant Denillo twierdzi, że została wystarczająca ilość śladów potrzebna na wskazanie sprawcy. I rzeczywiście, wkrótce Robert Doob zostaje aresztowany. Ale pomimo ewidentnych dowodów winy, błąd proceduralny popełniony przez prokuratora, uniemożliwia jego skazanie. Doob wychodzi na wolność.
